Ingredients

  • 3 cups milk
  • 1 cup Crisco
  • 3 packages yeast
  • 1 cup mashed potatoes (instant flakes)
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 2 tablespoons salt
  • 10 to 11 cups unsifted flour

Instructions

  1. Heat milk and shortening; cool.
  2. In a large bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water.
  3. Stir in 1/4 cup sugar from measurement.
  4. Let stand 5 minutes until foamy.
  5. Add remaining sugar, salt, flour, mashed potatoes, and cooled milk to yeast mixture.
  6. Blend all ingredients together until a stiff dough forms.
  7. Knead on a floured surface until smooth and elastic, about 5 to 8 minutes.
  8. Place dough in an oiled bowl and cover with a cloth.
  9. Let rise until doubled in size.
  10. Punch dough down and shape into loaves or rolls.
  11. Place in oiled pans in a warm place and let rise until full.
  12. Bake at 325°F for 45 minutes until golden brown.
