Ingredients

  • 4 cups lukewarm water
  • 4 cups flour
  • 4 tablespoons sugar
  • 4 cups additional flour
  • 2 packages yeast
  • 6 1/2 tablespoons shortening
  • 2 tablespoons salt

Instructions

  1. Dissolve the yeast in lukewarm water.
  2. Add 4 cups of flour and stir well.
  3. Add shortening, sugar, and salt, then stir until combined.
  4. Gradually add additional flour and knead the dough until it springs back when pressed.
  5. Cover the dough and let it rise until doubled in size.
  6. Punch down the dough, shape it into loaves, and place in loaf pans.
  7. Let the loaves rise again until nearly doubled.
  8. Bake at 350°F (175°C) until golden brown, about 45 minutes.
