Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 c. lukewarm buttermilk
  • 1/2 c. lukewarm water
  • 2 packs dry yeast
  • 1/2 c. melted shortening
  • 4 Tbsp. sugar
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 tsp. soda

Instructions

  1. Add yeast to lukewarm water and let it activate for a few minutes.
  2. Combine the activated yeast with buttermilk, melted shortening, sugar, salt, and soda.
  3. Gradually add 5 to 6 cups of plain flour, mixing until a soft dough forms.
  4. Let the dough rise until doubled in size, about 1 to 1.5 hours.
  5. Punch down the dough and shape into rolls as desired.
  6. Place the rolls on a greased baking sheet and let set in a warm place for 10 minutes.
  7. Bake at 425°F (220°C) until golden brown, about 12-15 minutes.
