Ingredients

  • 2 cups sifted regular flour
  • 4 teaspoons baking powder
  • 2 teaspoons sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 2/3 cup milk

Instructions

  1. Sift together into a bowl: flour, baking powder, sugar, salt, and cream of tartar.
  2. Add shortening to the flour mixture.
  3. Cut in the shortening with a pastry blender until the mixture resembles coarse cornmeal.
  4. Add milk all at once to the mixture.
  5. Stir just enough to make a soft dough.
  6. Turn out onto a lightly floured board.
  7. Knead lightly for 30 seconds.
  8. Roll out to a thickness of 1/2 inch.
  9. Cut with a floured 2-inch round cutter.
  10. Place on an ungreased baking sheet.
  11. Bake at 450°F for 12 to 15 minutes.
