Ingredients

  • 1/3 c. molasses
  • 1/2 c. brown sugar
  • 2 Tbsp. shortening
  • 2 yeast cakes
  • 6 c. white flour (approximately)
  • 1/3 c. white Karo syrup
  • 2 c. milk
  • 2 c. rye flour
  • 1/2 c. warm water

Instructions

  1. Scald and cool molasses, syrup, sugar, milk and shortening. Then add yeast, dissolved in warm water and rye flour.
  2. Add white flour to make a stiff dough.
  3. Place in greased bowl, cover with damp cloth.
  4. Let rise until double, about 3 hours.
