Paska Bread(Easter Bread)

Ingredients

  • 1 yeast cake (2 oz.)
  • 1 c. lukewarm water
  • 1 Tbsp. sugar
  • 1/4 c. shortening (butter)
  • 3/4 c. sugar
  • 3 c. scalded milk
  • 3 eggs (warm)
  • pinch of salt
  • 10 or more c. flour

Instructions

  1. Pour hot milk over sugar and shortening.
  2. Let cool to lukewarm.
  3. Crumble yeast in water and sugar.
  4. Let stand for 5 minutes.
  5. Sift flour in large bowl.
  6. Add salt and beaten eggs. Add milk and yeast mixture.
  7. Knead until smooth and elastic.
  8. Let rise in warm place 2 hours.
  9. (Cover.)
  10. Punch down, cover and let go for 1 hour.
  11. Flour board.
  12. Divide set in enamel pot.
  13. Let rise for 10 minutes; brush with milk.
  14. Prick with fork.
  15. Set in oven at 325° 10 minutes at 350° (40 minutes).
