- Preheat oven to 425°F.
- Combine dried basil, dried thyme or chives, salt, and black pepper to create the seasoning mixture.
- Place 2 tablespoons of oleo in a nonstick skillet and melt over medium heat.
- Arrange one-third of the sliced potatoes in a circular pattern in a baking dish, about one-third of the seasoning, one-third of the chopped onion, and 2 tablespoons of melted oleo over the layer.
- Repeat the layering process two more times with the remaining potatoes, seasoning, onions, and oleo.
- Cover the dish tightly with foil and press down gently to compact the layers.
- Bake uncovered for 20 minutes.
- Remove from oven and bake for another 20 minutes.
- Uncover and bake for an additional 20 minutes or until the potatoes are tender and the top is golden brown.
- Remove from oven and press down with a spatula to flatten.
- Let stand for 10 minutes, then transfer to a serving platter.
- Serve hot.
