Ingredients

  • 1 pkg. dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup warm water
  • 3/4 cup lukewarm buttermilk
  • 2 1/2 cups self-rising flour
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 3 tablespoons soft shortening

Instructions

  1. In a mixing bowl, dissolve the dry yeast in warm water.
  2. Add the lukewarm buttermilk, half of the flour, sugar, and soft shortening.
  3. Beat with a spoon until smooth and batter falls from the spoon in sheets.
  4. Using your hands, mix in enough of the remaining flour until the dough cleans the bowl.
  5. Turn out onto a lightly floured board.
  6. Cover and let rest for 10 to 15 minutes.
  7. Knead until smooth and blistered, about 10 minutes. Shape into crescents or your preferred shape.
  8. Let rise for 1 1/2 hours or until doubled in bulk.
  9. Bake at 400°F (200°C) for 15 to 20 minutes until golden brown.
