- In a mixing bowl, dissolve the dry yeast in warm water.
- Add the lukewarm buttermilk, half of the flour, sugar, and soft shortening.
- Beat with a spoon until smooth and batter falls from the spoon in sheets.
- Using your hands, mix in enough of the remaining flour until the dough cleans the bowl.
- Turn out onto a lightly floured board.
- Cover and let rest for 10 to 15 minutes.
- Knead until smooth and blistered, about 10 minutes. Shape into crescents or your preferred shape.
- Let rise for 1 1/2 hours or until doubled in bulk.
- Bake at 400°F (200°C) for 15 to 20 minutes until golden brown.
