Ingredients

  • 2 medium potatoes
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 6 eggs
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup Crisco shortening
  • 1 package yeast
  • 5 cups flour

Instructions

  1. Boil potatoes whole in salted water until tender.
  2. Remove skin and mash well.
  3. Dissolve yeast in 3 tablespoons warm water.
  4. Heat milk until hot (not boiling).
  5. Beat eggs until lemon colored.
  6. Add shortening, salt, and half of the flour; beat well.
  7. Add yeast, sugar, milk, and the remaining flour; mix well.
  8. Dough should be firm and spongy.
  9. Cover and raise in a warm area for 1 hour.
  10. Fill a frying pan with about an inch of oil.
  11. Take a tablespoon of dough and stretch with fingers.
  12. Drop the stretched dough into hot oil and fry until deep gold.
  13. Drain on paper towels and roll in a mixture of half powdered sugar and half granulated sugar.
