Spicy Dhal
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 tbsp vegetable oil or ghee ⓘ
- 1 None onion, finely chopped ⓘ
- 4 cloves garlic, crushed ⓘ
- 1 1/2 tsp ground cumin ⓘ
- 1 1/2 tsp garam masala
- 1/2 tsp turmeric ⓘ
- 1 pinch cayenne pepper (optional) ⓘ
- 1 1/2 cups yellow split peas, rinsed ⓘ
- 2 None onions, thinly sliced ⓘ
- 1/4 cup coarsely chopped fresh cilantro ⓘ
Instructions
- Heat half the oil in a medium saucepan on medium heat. Cook the onion and garlic, stirring, until the onion softens. Add the spices and cook, stirring, until fragrant.
- Add the split peas and 4 cups water and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to low; simmer, uncovered, for about 40 mins or until the split peas are tender. Season to taste.
- Heat the remaining oil in a medium skillet on medium heat. Cook the sliced onions, stirring occasionally, for about 5 mins or until browned.
- Serve the spicy dahl topped with the onion mixture and cilantro.
