Spicy Dhal

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 tbsp vegetable oil or ghee
  • 1 None onion, finely chopped
  • 4 cloves garlic, crushed
  • 1 1/2 tsp ground cumin
  • 1 1/2 tsp garam masala
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric
  • 1 pinch cayenne pepper (optional)
  • 1 1/2 cups yellow split peas, rinsed
  • 2 None onions, thinly sliced
  • 1/4 cup coarsely chopped fresh cilantro

Instructions

  1. Heat half the oil in a medium saucepan on medium heat. Cook the onion and garlic, stirring, until the onion softens. Add the spices and cook, stirring, until fragrant.
  2. Add the split peas and 4 cups water and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to low; simmer, uncovered, for about 40 mins or until the split peas are tender. Season to taste.
  3. Heat the remaining oil in a medium skillet on medium heat. Cook the sliced onions, stirring occasionally, for about 5 mins or until browned.
  4. Serve the spicy dahl topped with the onion mixture and cilantro.
