Ingredients

  • 2 1/4 cups sour cream
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 package yeast
  • 3 tablespoons warm water
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 5 cups plain flour
  • 1/2 cup raisins
  • 1 cup mixed candied fruit
  • 1 cup nuts

Instructions

  1. Dissolve yeast in warm water; add 1 teaspoon sugar.
  2. Cut all fruit and nuts into small pieces as desired.
  3. Scald milk in a double boiler over low heat.
  4. Add sugar and salt; mix well.
  5. Cool the mixture and add yeast mixture and 3 cups of flour; beat well.
  6. Add remaining flour and mix until dough forms a ball free from the bowl.
  7. Knead the dough on a floured board; place in a greased bowl.
  8. Let the dough rise until doubled in size.
  9. Punch down the dough.
  10. Roll out to a 9 x 12 inch rectangle.
  11. Cover with fruit, nuts, and roll up like a jelly roll.
  12. Brush the top with oil.
  13. Let rise until doubled in size.
  14. Bake at 375°F until golden, about 25 minutes.
  15. Cover with powdered sugar or white icing.
  16. Add a few fruits and nuts on top before serving.
