Swedish Glogg is a warm, spiced wine beverage featuring port, Madeira, sherry, and aromatic herbs, perfect for festive occasions or cozy winter evenings.

Ingredients

  • 1 bottle Port wine
  • 1 bottle Madeira
  • 1 bottle sherry
  • 15 whole cloves
  • 15 cardamom seeds
  • 1/2 lb. block or cubed sugar
  • 1 shot glass cognac
  • 1 stick cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Wrap cloves, cardamom seeds, and cinnamon stick in cheesecloth to make a herb bundle.
  2. Let the herb bundle steep in Port wine, Madeira, and sherry in a large pot for a couple of hours.
  3. Heat the mixture slowly over low heat.
  4. Place sugar on a rack over the wine and herb mixture, or in a metal conical sieve.
  5. Heat cognac in a small pot, then pour hot cognac over the sugar and ignite it to caramelize.
  6. Ladle the hot wine mixture over the burning sugar until dissolved.
  7. Cover the pot and bring the mixture to a boil.
  8. Pour the Glogg through a strainer before serving.
