Ingredients

  • 4 small green apples, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 2 cups plus 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup salad oil
  • hot salad oil for frying

Instructions

  1. Cook apples in a saucepan over low heat about 20 minutes or until tender.
  2. Combine sugar, 2 tablespoons flour, cinnamon, and nutmeg; stir into apples and cook over low heat until thickened, stirring often.
  3. Set aside the apple filling.
  4. Combine 2 cups flour, salt, milk, and 1/2 cup oil in a mixing bowl; stir with a fork until mixture forms a ball.
  5. Divide the dough in half.
  6. Roll each ball out on a lightly floured board to 1/8 inch thickness.
  7. Cut out circles with a 2 1/2 inch biscuit cutter.
  8. Spoon about 3/4 teaspoon of apple mixture on half of each pastry circle.
  9. Moisten the edges with water.
  10. Fold the pastry circles in half and press with a fork to seal.
  11. Fry turnovers in 1 inch of hot salad oil until lightly browned, turning once.
  12. Drain on paper towels.
