Ingredients

  • 2 c. flour
  • 1/2 c. canola oil
  • 1/2 to 1 tsp. salt
  • 5 Tbsp. cold water

Instructions

  1. Place flour, oil, salt, and water in a bowl and mix quickly. Do not overwork the dough or it will become tough.
  2. Divide the dough into two portions.
  3. Put wax paper or plastic wrap on the counter or a large cutting board and place one portion of dough on it.
  4. Gently pat out the round of dough until it is about six inches in diameter.
  5. Place the other piece of wrap on top of the dough and roll out until the dough is the size of the pie dish with an extra 1 inch all around.
  6. Remove the top wrap and flip the dough over into the pie dish, then peel the bottom wrap off.
  7. Repeat the procedure for the top crust, except wait until the filling is in the pie dish before placing the top crust in place.
  8. Use the crust for your desired pie or tart, baking as needed.

Tips & Substitutions

For a flakier crust, make sure your canola oil is very cold. If you prefer a different flavor, you can substitute the canola oil with olive oil or melted coconut oil. If you don't have wax paper, parchment paper works well too. When mixing, use a fork to combine the ingredients quickly without overworking the dough, which helps prevent toughness.

Serving Suggestions

This crust is perfect for sweet or savory pies. Serve it with a scoop of vanilla ice cream if you make a fruit pie, or pair it with a fresh salad if you're making a savory dish. Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make this crust ahead of time?

Yes, you can prepare the dough a day in advance. Wrap it tightly in plastic wrap and store it in the refrigerator. Just make sure to let it come to room temperature for easier handling when you're ready to use it.

What if my dough is too crumbly?

If your dough feels too crumbly, it's likely that you need a bit more moisture. Add an additional tablespoon of cold water gradually until the dough holds together without being sticky. Remember to mix gently to avoid toughening the crust.

Can I use this crust for a quiche?
