Ingredients

  • 1 cup milk
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 2 1/2 tablespoons shortening
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 1 package yeast
  • 6 cups sifted flour

Instructions

  1. Scald the milk, then stir in sugar, salt, and shortening. Allow to cool to lukewarm.
  2. Pour warm water into a bowl, sprinkle yeast over the water, and dissolve. Add the milk mixture to the yeast.
  3. Stir in half of the sifted flour into the mixture, then add the remaining flour and combine.
  4. Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead until smooth and elastic.
  5. Place the kneaded dough into a greased bowl and brush the top with melted shortening.
  6. Cover and let rise for 1 hour and 20 minutes until doubled in size.
  7. Punch down the dough and divide into two equal parts.
  8. Knead each portion briefly, then place in greased loaf pans.
  9. Let the dough rise again for 55 minutes until puffy.
  10. Bake in a preheated oven at 400°F (200°C) for 50 minutes until golden brown and bread sounds hollow when tapped.
