Ingredients

  • 2 loaves (20 oz. each) white bread with crusts, cut into 1-inch cubes (about 32 c.)
  • 2 c. oleo or butter, melted
  • 40 c. (about 12 lb.) sliced, peeled apples
  • 3 c. packed brown sugar, divided
  • 2 c. sugar
  • 2 tsp. nutmeg
  • 2 tsp. cinnamon
  • 4 c. water
  • 3 Tbsp. lemon juice

Instructions

  1. Toss bread cubes with oleo.
  2. Divide half of the cubes among 4 greased 13 x 9 x 2-inch baking pans.
  3. Arrange apples over bread, using 10 cups per pan.
  4. Mix 2 cups brown sugar, sugar, nutmeg and cinnamon.
  5. Divide into fourths and sprinkle over apples.
  6. Mix water and lemon juice; pour a fourth into each pan.
  7. Top with remaining bread cubes.
  8. Sprinkle remaining brown sugar equally over pans. Cover and bake at 375° for 30 minutes.
  9. Uncover and bake 25 to 30 minutes longer.
  10. Serves 50 to 60.
