- Dissolve the dry yeast in warm water and let it sit until foamy.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the shortening, sugar, and buttermilk.
- Add the yeast mixture to the bowl and mix well.
- Gradually stir in the self-rising flour until a soft dough forms.
- Turn the dough onto a floured surface and roll out to about 1/2 inch thickness.
- Cut out biscuits or rolls using a biscuit cutter or a glass.
- Place the cut dough on a greased cookie sheet.
- Let the dough rise for 30 minutes in a warm place.
- Brush the tops with a little butter.
- Bake at 350° to 400°F until golden brown, about 15 minutes.
