Ingredients

  • 2 pkg. dry yeast
  • 4 Tbsp. warm water
  • 1 c. shortening
  • 4 Tbsp. sugar
  • 2 c. buttermilk
  • 5 c. self-rising flour

Instructions

  1. Dissolve the dry yeast in warm water and let it sit until foamy.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the shortening, sugar, and buttermilk.
  3. Add the yeast mixture to the bowl and mix well.
  4. Gradually stir in the self-rising flour until a soft dough forms.
  5. Turn the dough onto a floured surface and roll out to about 1/2 inch thickness.
  6. Cut out biscuits or rolls using a biscuit cutter or a glass.
  7. Place the cut dough on a greased cookie sheet.
  8. Let the dough rise for 30 minutes in a warm place.
  9. Brush the tops with a little butter.
  10. Bake at 350° to 400°F until golden brown, about 15 minutes.
