Ingredients

  • 1 cup flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons shortening or oil
  • 3/8 cup milk

Instructions

  1. Sift flour, salt, and baking powder together in a bowl.
  2. Work in shortening with a knife or fingertips until crumbly.
  3. Add milk gradually to make a soft dough.
  4. Drop a tablespoon of dough at a time onto boiling soup or stew during the last 15 to 20 minutes of cooking.
  5. Ensure the kettle is covered tightly during cooking; do not remove the cover.
  6. Cook until the dumplings are puffed and cooked through.
