Ingredients

  • 1/2 c. rye meal or all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 c. corn meal
  • 1/2 c. whole wheat flour
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 3/8 c. molasses
  • 1 c. sour milk

Instructions

  1. Mix the dry ingredients.
  2. Stir in the liquids and mix well. Grease a mold.
  3. Fill the mold not more than 2/3 full.
  4. Put on the cover. Place on a rack in a deep kettle.
  5. Add boiling water to come halfway up around the mold.
  6. Cover.
  7. Steam for 3 to 3 1/2 hours, keeping the water boiling.
  8. Add more water as necessary.
  9. Run a knife around the inside of the mold to loosen the loaf to remove it.
