Ingredients

  • 1 pkg. dry yeast
  • 1 3/4 cups very warm water
  • 1 Tbsp. sugar
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1 Tbsp. shortening
  • 4 to 5 cups flour

Instructions

  1. Dissolve yeast and sugar in very warm water.
  2. Let set about 5 minutes until foamy.
  3. Beat in salt, shortening, and 2 cups of flour.
  4. Add enough remaining flour to make a stiff dough.
  5. Turn dough out on a floured surface and knead until smooth and elastic.
  6. Roll dough into a ball.
  7. Place in a greased bowl and turn to grease the top.
  8. Let rise until doubled, about 1 hour.
  9. Punch down dough and divide into 8 equal pieces.
