Ingredients

  • 4 c. sugar
  • 1 c. water
  • 1 c. light corn syrup
  • 5 drops food coloring
  • butter
  • 3/4 tsp. oil of cinnamon, cloves, vanilla, etc.
  • powdered sugar

Instructions

  1. Combine sugar, water, and light corn syrup in a heavy saucepan and cook over medium heat.
  2. Stir until the sugar dissolves completely and the mixture reaches hard crack stage (about 300°F or 150°C).
  3. Remove from heat and add food coloring and your choice of oil (cinnamon, cloves, vanilla, etc.).
  4. Pour the hot syrup onto a greased or parchment-lined baking sheet and let it cool slightly.
  5. Once cooled but still warm, break the hardened candy into irregular shards resembling broken glass.
  6. Optional: Dust with powdered sugar for a finished look.
