California Yeast Rolls

Soft, buttery California Yeast Rolls with a tender crumb and golden crust, perfect for family dinners, holidays, or any occasion that calls for warm, homemade bread.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups milk
  • 1/2 cup shortening or margarine
  • 3 cups Pillsbury bread flour
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 packages yeast
  • 1 egg

Instructions

  1. In a saucepan, heat milk and shortening until shortening is melted.
  2. In a large bowl, mix together flour, sugar, salt, and yeast.
  3. Gradually stir in the hot milk and shortening mixture.
  4. Add the egg and stir well.
  5. Mix in enough flour to achieve kneading consistency.
  6. Knead the dough for 5 minutes.
  7. Cover the dough and let it rest for 10 minutes.
  8. Pinch off small pieces of dough and shape into rolls.
  9. Place the rolls in a greased pan.
  10. When the pan is filled, cover the rolls and let them rise in a warm, draft-free place for 45 minutes.
  11. Preheat oven to 325°F (163°C).
  12. Bake the rolls for 20 minutes until golden brown.
