Ingredients

  • 16 lb. cucumbers
  • 2 cups sack salt
  • 1 gallon water
  • 1/2 box alum
  • 1 gallon apple cider vinegar
  • 10 lb. sugar

Instructions

  1. Soak whole cucumbers in salt water for 14 days.
  2. Remove from salt water; slice and soak overnight in alum water.
  3. Remove from alum water.
  4. Rinse and soak in apple cider vinegar for 6 hours.
  5. Remove from vinegar.
  6. Pour out the vinegar.
  7. Layer the cucumbers with sugar and pickling spice in a stone or glass jar.
  8. Let stand for several days before using; pickles do not need to be sealed.
