Ingredients

  • 2 cups hot water
  • 2 packages yeast
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 cup shortening
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 7 cups plain flour, divided
  • 2 eggs

Instructions

  1. Dissolve yeast in hot water and stir until mixed.
  2. Add sugar, shortening, and salt to the yeast mixture.
  3. Add 4 cups of the plain flour and mix by hand or with a mixer.
  4. Add 2 eggs to the dough.
  5. Gradually add up to 3 more cups of plain flour until the dough is workable.
  6. Let the dough rise for 1 to 1 1/2 hours.
  7. Roll the dough out and cut with a biscuit cutter.
  8. Fold each cut dough piece in half and brush with melted butter.
  9. Let the shaped rolls rise again for 1 to 1 1/2 hours.
  10. Bake at 400°F for 6 to 8 minutes until golden brown.
