Ingredients

  • 2 cups flour
  • 3 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 4 tablespoons shortening
  • 2/3 cup milk
  • 4 tablespoons sugar

Instructions

  1. Mix together flour, baking powder, salt, sugar, and shortening until crumbly.
  2. Roll dough to 1/4-inch thickness on a floured surface.
  3. Spread a generous amount of butter over the dough.
  4. Drain 2 cans of sweetened cherries and heat cherries with 2 cups of sugar until the sugar is dissolved.
  5. Spread the cherry mixture evenly over the dough.
  6. Sprinkle a little cinnamon over the cherries and dough, then carefully roll the dough into a pinwheel shape to distribute cherries evenly.
  7. Cut the rolled dough into slices similar to cinnamon rolls.
  8. Place the slices cut side down in a well-buttered baking pan.
  9. Bake at 400°F (200°C) for 15 minutes.
  10. Pour the thickened and sweetened cherry juice over the dumplings and bake for an additional 5 minutes or until slightly browned.
  11. Serve warm, plain or with cream.
