- Mix together flour, baking powder, salt, sugar, and shortening until crumbly.
- Roll dough to 1/4-inch thickness on a floured surface.
- Spread a generous amount of butter over the dough.
- Drain 2 cans of sweetened cherries and heat cherries with 2 cups of sugar until the sugar is dissolved.
- Spread the cherry mixture evenly over the dough.
- Sprinkle a little cinnamon over the cherries and dough, then carefully roll the dough into a pinwheel shape to distribute cherries evenly.
- Cut the rolled dough into slices similar to cinnamon rolls.
- Place the slices cut side down in a well-buttered baking pan.
- Bake at 400°F (200°C) for 15 minutes.
- Pour the thickened and sweetened cherry juice over the dumplings and bake for an additional 5 minutes or until slightly browned.
- Serve warm, plain or with cream.
