Ingredients

  • 4 oz. white chocolate
  • 4 oz. dark chocolate
  • 2 Tbsp. vegetable shortening

Instructions

  1. Put white chocolate and dark chocolate in separate saucepans. Add 1 tablespoon of shortening to each pan.
  2. Stir over very low heat until melted.
  3. Pour each mixture into small square plastic containers.
  4. Freeze until firm.
  5. Remove the chocolate from the containers and, using a cheese slicer or vegetable peeler, scrape across the surface of each to make curls.

Tips & Substitutions

For best results, use high-quality chocolate for a smoother finish. If you don't have vegetable shortening, coconut oil can be a good substitute to help with the melting process. Make sure to stir constantly over low heat to prevent the chocolate from seizing. If you want a more intense flavor, try adding a pinch of sea salt to the melted chocolate before pouring into containers.

Serving Suggestions

These chocolate curls are a fantastic garnish for desserts like cakes, cupcakes, or even a bowl of ice cream. They pair beautifully with Vegan recipes, adding an elegant touch to a simple dessert. You can also use them to enhance the presentation of a fruit platter or mix them into a rich chocolate mousse for added texture.

Storage & Reheating

Store chocolate curls in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to two weeks. If you want to keep them longer, you can freeze them, but ensure they are well-wrapped to prevent freezer burn. When ready to use, simply take them out and let them come to room temperature for a few minutes before serving.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use milk chocolate instead of dark chocolate?

Yes, you can substitute milk chocolate for dark chocolate if you prefer a sweeter flavor. Just keep in mind that milk chocolate has a different melting point, so watch it closely while melting to avoid burning.

How thick should I make the chocolate curls?

The thickness of the curls is up to you, but aim for a consistent width of about 1/8 inch for a nice balance of texture and presentation. Experiment to find the thickness that you enjoy most.

What if my chocolate doesn’t melt smoothly?

If your chocolate seizes or doesn’t melt smoothly, try adding a small amount of additional shortening or coconut oil to help loosen it. Always melt chocolate slowly and avoid moisture, as even a drop can cause it to seize.
