Ingredients

  • 1 egg
  • 1 Tbsp. cold water
  • 2 Tbsp. sugar
  • 1/2 tsp. vanilla
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1 c. sifted all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 Tbsp. rum flavoring (optional)

Instructions

  1. Put all ingredients except flour in a bowl and beat until well mixed.
  2. Stir in sifted flour and chill for 30 minutes.
  3. Roll the mixture very thin on a floured board.
  4. Cut into 1/4-inch strips.
  5. Make a small lengthwise slit in the center of each strip.
  6. Roll one end through the slit to make a bow shape.
  7. Deep fry in hot oil or shortening until golden brown.
  8. Drain and dust with powdered sugar, then cool before serving.

Tips & Substitutions

For a lighter texture, ensure your oil is hot enough before frying; this prevents the dough from absorbing too much oil. If you want to avoid rum flavoring, a few drops of almond extract can give a nice depth instead. You can also experiment with flavored sugars for dusting, such as cinnamon or cocoa powder, to add different twists to your Chruschedi.

Serving Suggestions

Chruschedi are delightful on their own, but they can also be served alongside a fruit compote or a side of whipped cream for dipping. They pair beautifully with a warm cup of tea or coffee, making them a perfect treat for afternoon gatherings. For a festive touch, consider dusting with colored powdered sugar during holidays.

Storage & Reheating

Store leftover Chruschedi in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days to maintain their crispness. If they become soft, you can briefly reheat them in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for about 5 minutes to restore their crunch before serving.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make the dough ahead of time?

Yes, you can prepare the dough a day in advance. Chill it in an airtight container in the refrigerator. When you're ready to fry, let it sit at room temperature for about 15 minutes to soften slightly before rolling it out.

What type of oil is best for frying?

For frying Chruschedi, use oils with high smoke points like vegetable oil or canola oil. These oils help achieve a golden-brown color without imparting strong flavors, ensuring the delicate taste of the dough shines through.

Can I bake Chruschedi instead of frying?

While traditional Chruschedi are deep-fried for the best texture, you can bake them at 375°F (190°C) for about 10-12 minutes. Brush them lightly with egg wash for a golden finish, though they may not be as crispy as their fried counterparts.
