Ingredients

  • 1 cup flour
  • 1/4 cup cornmeal
  • 1/2 teaspoon cornmeal
  • 1/3 cup plus 1 tablespoon shortening

Instructions

  1. Measure flour, cornmeal, and salt into a bowl.
  2. Cut in shortening thoroughly until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. Sprinkle in water, one tablespoon at a time, mixing until all flour is moistened.
  4. Gather the mixture into a ball.
  5. Roll out into a rectangle approximately 12 x 8 inches on a lightly floured cloth-covered board.
  6. Fold the rectangle lengthwise in half and cut slits in the folded edge.
