Ingredients

  • 3 c. sifted flour
  • 1/2 c. Crisco
  • 1 level tsp. sugar
  • pinch of salt
  • 2 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 2 heaping Tbsp. sour cream
  • 1 Tbsp. brandy or 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 3/4 to 1 c. milk

Instructions

  1. Combine sifted flour, sugar, salt, and baking powder in a mixing bowl.
  2. Cut in Crisco until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. Add beaten egg, sour cream, and brandy or vanilla; mix until dough starts to come together.
  4. Add milk gradually, kneading until the dough is soft but not too stiff.
  5. Knead until the dough comes off your fingers.
  6. Divide the dough into three balls and let sit for at least 20 minutes to relax.
  7. Roll each ball out thin on a floured surface.
  8. Cut into 4-inch squares and make two or three slits in each square.
  9. Heat oil in a deep fryer or large skillet until hot.
  10. Fry the squares in hot oil until golden brown and crispy.
  11. Remove and drain on paper towels before serving.
