Ingredients

  • 2 pkg. yeast
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 2 Tbsp. sugar
  • 3/4 cup Crisco
  • 8 Tbsp. sugar
  • 1 Tbsp. salt
  • flour (enough to make thick paste)

Instructions

  1. Mix yeast, warm water, and 2 tablespoons sugar in a glass. Let stand for 10 to 15 minutes until foamy.
  2. In a large roaster, combine 8 cups water, Crisco, 8 tablespoons sugar, salt, and enough flour to make a thick paste.
  3. Add the yeast mixture to the flour mixture, then gradually add more flour until the dough no longer sticks to your hands.
  4. Knead the dough until smooth, then cover with a towel and let rise in a warm place until doubled in size.
  5. Knead the dough again, then shape into loaves and place in greased loaf pans.
  6. Let the dough rise in the pans until doubled in size.
  7. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 35 minutes.
  8. Let stand for 20 minutes before cutting and serving.
