Ingredients

  • 1 cup flour, sifted
  • 1 stick butter
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 1 stick butter

Instructions

  1. Heat oven to 350°F.
  2. Measure 1 cup of sifted flour into a bowl.
  3. Cut in 1 stick of butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Sprinkle with 2 tablespoons of water and mix with a fork.
  5. Form into a ball and divide in half.
  6. Pat each half into a 12 x 3-inch long strip on an ungreased baking sheet, about 3 inches apart.
  7. In a saucepan, melt 1 stick of butter and add 2 tablespoons of water.
  8. Bring to a rolling boil.
  9. Add almond flavoring and remove from heat.
  10. Stir in 1 cup of flour immediately to prevent lumping.
  11. When smooth and thick, add 1 egg at a time, beating until smooth after each addition.
  12. Divide the filling in half and spread evenly over each pastry strip.
  13. Bake for about 60 minutes until topping is crisp and browned.
  14. Frost with powdered sugar glaze flavored with almond extract and sprinkle generously with sliced almonds.
