Ingredients

  • 5 large yellow onions, sliced thin
  • 4 Tbsp. margarine or butter
  • 4 Tbsp. flour
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 20 beef bouillon cubes
  • 2 chicken bouillon cubes

Instructions

  1. Place all bouillon cubes in 2 quarts of hot water and let sit, stirring occasionally to dissolve.
  2. While the broth is preparing, melt margarine or butter in a large pot over medium heat.
  3. Add sliced onions and cook, stirring frequently, until they are caramelized and golden brown, about 30-40 minutes.
  4. Stir in flour and sugar, cooking for a few minutes to form a roux.
  5. Pour the hot bouillon into the onion mixture, stirring well to combine.
  6. Simmer the soup for an additional 20 minutes to develop flavors.
  7. Serve hot, garnished as desired.
