Ingredients

  • 2 pkg. dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup warm water
  • 2/3 cup scalded milk
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup melted butter
  • 3 eggs
  • 4 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 grated lemon rind

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, put the scalded milk.
  2. Mix the dry yeast with 1/4 cup warm water and let it activate.
  3. Slowly beat in sugar, salt, and melted butter into the milk.
  4. Add beaten eggs and 1 cup of flour, then mix in slowly.
  5. Add the activated yeast mixture and mix well.
  6. Stir in vanilla and grated lemon rind.
  7. Gradually add the remaining flour, a little at a time, mixing until the dough is soft.
  8. Grease a large bowl and place the dough inside.
  9. Let the dough rise for 1 hour.
  10. Punch down the dough and let it rise for an additional 30 minutes.
  11. Roll and braid the dough, forming it into a circle.
  12. Place the shaped dough on a cookie sheet and let it rise for 30 minutes.
  13. Brush the top with a mixture of 1 beaten egg and 1 teaspoon milk.
  14. Sprinkle colored candies all over the dough.
  15. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 30 to 35 minutes until golden brown.
