Tips & Substitutions

For best results, ensure your yeast is fresh and the water is not too hot, as it can kill the yeast. If you don’t have shortening, butter or margarine can be used as substitutes. You can also experiment with adding herbs or garlic powder into the dough for extra flavor, making it a great base for rolls to accompany dishes like Mama'S Fruit Pudding.

Serving Suggestions

Serve these rolls warm with butter, honey, or your favorite jam for a delightful treat. They pair well with soups, stews, or even as a side to dishes like Cheddar Pig Crackers. For a sweet twist, consider serving them alongside a dessert such as Grandma'S Lemon Chiffon Pie.

Storage & Reheating

Store any leftover rolls in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days. For longer storage, freeze the rolls in a zip-top bag for up to 3 months. To reheat, simply pop them in a warm oven for 5-10 minutes or microwave briefly until warmed through.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use whole wheat flour instead of all-purpose flour?

Yes, you can substitute whole wheat flour, but be aware that it may result in denser rolls. For best results, consider using half whole wheat and half all-purpose flour to maintain some lightness while adding nutritional value.

What should I do if my dough doesn't rise?

If your dough doesn't rise, it could be due to inactive yeast or a cold environment. Ensure your yeast is fresh and try placing the dough in a warm, draft-free area. If the dough still doesn’t rise, it may be best to start over with new yeast.

Can I make the dough ahead of time?

Absolutely! You can prepare the dough and let it rise, then shape the rolls and place them in the fridge for up to 24 hours before baking. Just allow them to come to room temperature and rise again for about 20 minutes before baking for the best results.
