Tips & Substitutions

For best results, ensure your water is warm but not hot, around 110°F (43°C), to activate the yeast without killing it. If you don't have shortening, you can substitute with an equal amount of unsalted butter or vegetable oil. Using bread flour instead of all-purpose flour can yield a chewier texture. Make sure to grease your cans well to prevent sticking.

Serving Suggestions

These English muffins are perfect for breakfast, topped with butter, jam, or honey. They can also be used for delicious breakfast sandwiches, pairing beautifully with eggs and cheese. For a lighter option, serve them alongside a fresh salad or with Parsley Buttered Potatoes for a comforting meal.

Storage & Reheating

Store leftover English muffins in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days. For longer storage, freeze them in a zip-top bag for up to 3 months. To reheat, slice them in half and toast until golden brown for the best texture and flavor.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use instant yeast instead of active dry yeast?

Yes, you can use instant yeast in this recipe. Simply mix it directly with the dry ingredients without proofing it in water first. You may need to slightly adjust the amount, usually using about 25% less than active dry yeast for optimal results.

What can I do if my dough isn’t rising?

If your dough isn't rising, check the temperature of your water; it should be warm but not too hot. Ensure your yeast is fresh and active. If necessary, find a warmer spot in your kitchen, or use the oven with the light on to create a warm environment for rising.

Can I add flavors or ingredients to the dough?

Absolutely! You can customize your English muffins by adding ingredients like herbs, cheese, or spices to the dough. Try incorporating dried herbs for a savory twist or shredded cheese for added richness. Just be sure not to add too much moisture, which can affect the dough's consistency.
