Ingredients

  • 2 cakes compressed or granular yeast
  • 1 1/2 cups milk
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 5 1/2 cups flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 1/4 cup shortening (oil)
  • 2 eggs

Instructions

  1. Heat the milk to lukewarm.
  2. Add sugar and dissolve the yeast in the milk; let stand for 5 minutes.
  3. Add 3 cups of flour and beat vigorously.
  4. Add salt and eggs, then beat well again.
  5. Add melted shortening or oil.
  6. Gradually add the remaining flour until the dough becomes stiff.
  7. Turn the dough onto a floured board and knead.
  8. Return to an oiled bowl and let the dough rise until doubled in bulk.
  9. Punch down the dough and let it rise again.
  10. When light, knead the dough before shaping into rolls.
  11. Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 18 minutes.
