Ingredients

  • 2 cups milk
  • 1/3 cup lard
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 yeast cake
  • 8 cups flour

Instructions

  1. Bring milk and lard to the boiling point but do not boil. Stir in sugar and salt; let cool to lukewarm.
  2. Beat eggs and add to the milk mixture.
  3. Soak yeast cake in 2 tablespoons warm water and keep warm.
  4. Sift and measure the flour.
  5. Add the yeast to the lukewarm mixture and combine well.
  6. Gradually add the flour, mixing to form a soft dough.
  7. Knead the dough until smooth and elastic.
  8. Cover and let rise until doubled in size.
  9. Roll out the dough to about 1/2 inch thickness.
  10. Cut into rounds or desired shapes.
  11. Heat oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 375°F (190°C).
  12. Fry the fasnachts until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes per side.
  13. Drain on paper towels and serve warm.
