French Bread Braids

Ingredients

  • 5 1/2 to 6 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3 teaspoons salt
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 2 packages dry yeast
  • 2 tablespoons shortening
  • 2 cups warm water
  • 1 egg white

Instructions

  1. In a large mixer bowl, combine 3 cups of flour, salt, sugar, and dry yeast.
  2. Add shortening and warm water.
  3. Blend at the lowest speed until moistened; beat for 3 minutes at medium speed.
  4. By hand, stir in remaining flour to form a stiff dough.
  5. Turn out onto a well-floured surface.
  6. Knead until smooth, about 3 minutes.
  7. Place in a greased bowl, turning to grease the top.
  8. Cover and let rise in a warm place until light and doubled in size, about 1 hour.
  9. Punch down the dough; divide in half.
  10. Divide each half into three parts.
  11. Form each part into a 14-inch long strip.
  12. Braid the three strips together, sealing the ends. Place on a greased cookie sheet.
  13. Repeat with the other half.
  14. Brush the braids with a mixture of egg white and water.
  15. Cover loosely and let rise until light and doubled in size, about 45 minutes.
  16. Brush again with the egg white mixture.
  17. Sprinkle with poppy or sesame seeds if desired.
  18. Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 35 to 40 minutes until golden brown.
