Ingredients

  • 1 pkg. yeast
  • 1 Tbsp. sugar
  • 1 Tbsp. shortening, softened
  • 1 1/2 c. very warm water
  • 1 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 4 c. flour, sifted

Instructions

  1. Sprinkle yeast into 1/2 cup warm water and stir until dissolved. Dissolve sugar and salt in 1 cup warm water.
  2. Add softened shortening and yeast mixture; mix well.
  3. Add sifted flour and mix until combined.
  4. Work through dough with a spoon 5 times at 10-minute intervals.
  5. Turn dough onto a lightly floured board and divide in half.
  6. Shape each half into a ball and let rest for 10 minutes.
  7. Roll each into a 12 x 9-inch rectangle.
  8. Place on a baking sheet.
  9. Score with 6 diagonal marks on each loaf.
  10. Cover with a towel and let rise for 1 1/2 hours.
  11. Bake at 450°F for 30 to 35 minutes until golden brown.
