- Sprinkle yeast into 1/2 cup warm water and stir until dissolved. Dissolve sugar and salt in 1 cup warm water.
- Add softened shortening and yeast mixture; mix well.
- Add sifted flour and mix until combined.
- Work through dough with a spoon 5 times at 10-minute intervals.
- Turn dough onto a lightly floured board and divide in half.
- Shape each half into a ball and let rest for 10 minutes.
- Roll each into a 12 x 9-inch rectangle.
- Place on a baking sheet.
- Score with 6 diagonal marks on each loaf.
- Cover with a towel and let rise for 1 1/2 hours.
- Bake at 450°F for 30 to 35 minutes until golden brown.
