Ingredients

  • 1 pkg. dry yeast
  • 1 1/4 cups warm water
  • 2 tablespoons shortening
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 3 cups flour
  • Butter

Instructions

  1. Combine yeast, warm water, shortening, salt, sugar, and 1 1/2 cups of flour in a large mixing bowl.
  2. Mix with an electric mixer on low to medium speed until batter is smooth.
  3. Stir in the remaining flour.
  4. Set in a warm place and allow to rise for 30 minutes.
  5. Stir down the batter and beat 25 strokes with a wooden spoon.
  6. Pour the batter into a large, well-buttered loaf pan.
  7. Let rise until doubled in size, about 30 minutes.
  8. Preheat oven to 425°F (218°C).
  9. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes.
  10. Remove from oven, butter the top, and place on a rack to cool.
