- Stir sugar into hot water and sprinkle yeast on top; let stand until dissolved.
- Add salt, shortening, and flour; mix until dough is stiff and not sticky.
- If using a heavy-duty mixer, knead with a dough hook; by hand, turn onto floured surface and knead well.
- Place dough in a greased bowl, turning to coat all sides.
- Cover and let sit in a warm place until doubled in size.
- Turn out onto a floured surface; knead and shape into rolls.
- Dip the rolls in melted butter.
- Place in a greased pan and let rise until they reach the top of the pan.
- Bake at 350°F until golden brown.
