Ingredients

  • 1 cup hot water
  • 1 heaping tablespoon sugar
  • 1 packet yeast
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 heaping tablespoon shortening
  • 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour

Instructions

  1. Stir sugar into hot water and sprinkle yeast on top; let stand until dissolved.
  2. Add salt, shortening, and flour; mix until dough is stiff and not sticky.
  3. If using a heavy-duty mixer, knead with a dough hook; by hand, turn onto floured surface and knead well.
  4. Place dough in a greased bowl, turning to coat all sides.
  5. Cover and let sit in a warm place until doubled in size.
  6. Turn out onto a floured surface; knead and shape into rolls.
  7. Dip the rolls in melted butter.
  8. Place in a greased pan and let rise until they reach the top of the pan.
  9. Bake at 350°F until golden brown.
