Ingredients

  • 2 pkg. dry yeast
  • 1 c. water
  • 1 c. milk
  • 1/2 c. sugar
  • 1 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1 egg
  • 6 c. flour
  • 5 Tbsp. melted shortening

Instructions

  1. Pour warm milk and water into a large mixing bowl.
  2. Sprinkle dry yeast over the liquids and stir well to dissolve.
  3. Add sugar, salt, and well-beaten egg to the mixture and stir.
  4. Sift flour once before measuring, then add 3 cups of flour to the mixture and beat well by hand.
  5. Add melted shortening and stir until combined.
  6. Mix in the remaining 3 cups of flour and knead enough by hand in the bowl until the dough is smooth.
  7. Allow the dough to rise in a well-greased bowl until about double in size, approximately 2 hours in a warm place.
  8. Work down the dough and place it in a well-greased bowl, then cover and refrigerate until ready to use, about 1 week.
  9. When ready to bake, drop portions of dough into well-greased muffin tins, cover, and let rise again until doubled.
  10. Bake at 400°F (200°C) for about 20 minutes or until golden brown.
