Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup lard
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 2 well beaten eggs
  • 1 yeast cake
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 6 or 7 cups flour

Instructions

  1. Mix lard, sugar, and salt in a granite dish pan.
  2. Beat in the eggs with a spoon.
  3. Dissolve the yeast cake in warm water.
  4. Add the yeast mixture to the lard, sugar, and salt mixture.
  5. Add flour gradually to the warm water and yeast mixture.
  6. Add flour until the dough is stiff and not sticky; then pat into a ball.
  7. Leave the dough in the dishpan and cover with a tea towel.
  8. Let rise for 2 hours.
  9. Pull off about 2-inch pieces of dough.
  10. Roll each piece into a ball.
  11. Place the balls in greased pans or into loaf bread pans.
  12. Let rise for another 2 hours.
  13. Bake at 350° to 375°F for 20 to 25 minutes or until golden brown.
  14. Brush with butter immediately after removing from oven and pan.
  15. Let cool slightly and serve warm.
