Ingredients

  • 10 lb. lukewarm melted grease
  • 2 (1 lb.) cans lye
  • 2 qt. cold water
  • 6 tsp. salt
  • 4 Tbsp. sugar
  • 6 Tbsp. Borax
  • 1 c. cold water
  • 1/2 c. ammonia

Instructions

  1. Dissolve lye in cold water, being careful not to let it splash.
  2. Let the lye solution stand until cool.
  3. Add warm melted grease slowly to the cooled lye solution, stirring constantly.
  4. Add salt, sugar, borax, cold water, and ammonia to the mixture.
  5. Stir until the mixture becomes thick, about one hour.
