Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup warm water (105° to 115°F)
  • 3 packages dry yeast
  • 5 1/2 cups unsifted flour
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1/2 stick oleo
  • 1/4 cup white raisins

Instructions

  1. Scald the milk.
  2. Stir in sugar, salt, oleo, and vanilla.
  3. Cool to lukewarm.
  4. Put warm water into a warm bowl and add yeast.
  5. Stir until dissolved.
  6. Stir in lukewarm milk mixture, 2 eggs, and 3 cups of flour. Beat until smooth.
  7. Add enough flour to make a soft dough.
  8. Turn out onto a lightly floured board.
  9. Knead until smooth and elastic (about 10 minutes).
  10. Place in a greased bowl, turning to grease the top. Cover and let rise in a warm place until double in size (about 1 hour).
  11. Punch down the dough.
  12. Turn out onto a lightly floured board.
  13. Knead in raisins until well distributed.
  14. Shape the dough as a loaf or braid.
  15. Bake at 375°F for 40 minutes.
  16. Brush with melted butter.
