Ingredients

  • 1 pkg. yeast
  • 2 Tbsp. sugar
  • 2 1/2 c. lukewarm water
  • 1/2 c. sugar
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 3 Tbsp. bacon drippings

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, mix yeast, 2 tablespoons sugar, and lukewarm water. Let proof for 10 minutes.
  2. Add 1/2 cup sugar, salt, and bacon drippings. Stir in enough flour until mixture forms a ball.
  3. Lightly knead in more flour if needed to make a soft dough.
  4. Leave in the bowl and lightly coat the top with oil or melted butter. Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled, about 1 to 2 hours.
  5. Divide dough into 2 parts without kneading.
  6. Shape into loaves and place in 2 greased loaf pans.
  7. Let rise until nearly doubled in size.
  8. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 30 to 40 minutes, until golden brown.
