Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup shortening
  • 2 1/4 cups sugar
  • 8 egg yolks
  • 3 3/4 cups sifted cake flour
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 3/4 cups milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon almond extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Cream the shortening; gradually add sugar, beating well at medium speed of an electric mixer.
  2. Add egg yolks, one at a time, beating well after each addition.
  3. Combine flour, baking powder, and salt; add to the creamed mixture alternately with milk, beginning and ending with the flour mixture.
  4. Mix just until blended after each addition and stir in the flavorings.
  5. Pour batter into 3 greased and floured 9-inch round cake pans.
  6. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 20 to 25 minutes or until a wooden pick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  7. Cool in pans for 10 minutes.
  8. Remove from pans and cool completely.
  9. Frost the cake as desired.
