Ingredients

  • 8 cups self-rising flour (White Lily)
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons soda
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 1 1/2 cups Crisco
  • 3 packages dry yeast
  • 3/4 cup lukewarm water
  • 3 cups buttermilk
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons salad oil

Instructions

  1. Sift dry ingredients into a large mixing bowl.
  2. Cut in the Crisco until the mixture resembles fine crumbs.
  3. Dissolve the dry yeast in lukewarm water.
  4. Make a hole in the center of the flour mixture.
  5. Add the yeast mixture first, then pour in the buttermilk and mix together.
  6. Brush the top with salad oil to prevent crust formation.
  7. Cover and refrigerate overnight.
  8. Flour a dough cloth and roll out a portion of the dough.
  9. Use the same dough for biscuits or rolls, rolling thinner, then cutting, dipping in oleo, and folding in a pan.
