  1. Sift flour, sugar, and salt together.
  2. Cut in shortening until the mixture is the size of peas.
  3. Dissolve yeast in warm milk and add beaten eggs to the mixture.
  4. Add the yeast mixture to the flour mixture and knead until it comes away clean from the hands.
  5. Place the dough in a large bowl, cover with a tea towel, and refrigerate overnight.
  6. In olden days, Mama would put the bowl on the back porch.
  7. When ready to use, let the dough stand at room temperature until soft.
  8. Divide the dough into 4 sections on a floured surface and roll out each one.
  9. Spread nut filling over the surface of each rolled-out dough.
  10. Roll each one as for a jelly roll and brush the top with beaten egg.
  11. Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 45 minutes.
