- Sift flour, sugar, and salt together.
- Cut in shortening until the mixture is the size of peas.
- Dissolve yeast in warm milk and add beaten eggs to the mixture.
- Add the yeast mixture to the flour mixture and knead until it comes away clean from the hands.
- Place the dough in a large bowl, cover with a tea towel, and refrigerate overnight.
- In olden days, Mama would put the bowl on the back porch.
- When ready to use, let the dough stand at room temperature until soft.
- Divide the dough into 4 sections on a floured surface and roll out each one.
- Spread nut filling over the surface of each rolled-out dough.
- Roll each one as for a jelly roll and brush the top with beaten egg.
- Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 45 minutes.
