Maple Syrup Doughnuts

Ingredients

  • 1 c. maple syrup
  • 2/3 c. sour milk or buttermilk
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 Tbsp. vegetable shortening
  • about 4 c. sifted all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 tsp. ground nutmeg
  • vegetable oil (for deep-frying)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine maple syrup, milk, eggs and shortening; beat well.
  2. Add remaining ingredients, except oil; mix until a soft dough forms.
  3. Turn dough out onto a floured surface and pat to 1/2-inch thickness.
  4. Cut with doughnut cutter into rounds.
